Contrast and Clarity

Mini 2002 - sideI confess that over the past year I've questioned myself and wondered if I was moving in the right direction. I've tried to keep faith that things are progressing as they should but many times its seemed like maybe I was going backward.

A year ago I was at a job that I felt pretty good about with hopes that they would want to keep me on a permanent basis, I had my residency at Miami, as well as a guy in my sights that I felt was really special and the hope that things between us could develop. Exactly one year later, delete all three. You can see where I might have come up with the idea that maybe things were going in reverse. Its rare that the Universe gives me such a clear measuring stick as tonight to show me the truth of things -- that I really am on the right track.

Flash back one year ago this morning--
It had been a long night. After a night of holiday celebration I had gone to Charlie's with a friend to finish the evening. We had run into the object of my affection and while we had a good few moments together to talk and I had gotten that sense of connection that I just don't get from anyone else, I was still battling the truth that things just weren't progressing the way I had hoped. My friend, trying to be helpful in that very drunk sort of way, had mentioned that he thought he had seen him at Charlie's the week before macking on someone. Though I was under no illusion that we were any more than friends, hearing this was more than I could bear. As I made my way home, angry and very hurt, I narrowly missed a collision in front of me on the freeway. Though I managed to get out of it physically unharmed, Anderson, my beloved MINI Cooper, was not so lucky. As I would later find out, he was damaged beyond repair. I made the dreaded late night call to my parents to come pick me up and spent the morning on the phone with the insurance company, though most of the time I just kept wondering how I could have let myself get so out of control.

Mini 002And now the present day--
Its as though I got the chance to replay the night. A night of holiday festivities ended at Charlie's, though I usually avoid the place. I thought I would get through the evening unscathed, he was there with his boyfriend, who I've known about for about 6 months or so. Again, we had a few moments to to talk, that sense of connection I don't get from anyone else... I've spent a lot of time coming to terms with the reality that things just never went the way I would have liked and I've tried to convince myself that I was over him... but truth is that in my heart I wish I could wave my magic wand and make things change so that we could be together... but its hard to ignore his boyfriend staring me in the face... especially after his boyfriend remarks that we kind of look alike in some ways.

And though I wish I could say that I saw him and was delighted that my feelings had changed and that it was clear that I had moved on, it still hurts. Yet confronted with what I had been trying to avoid for a very long time, Nigel (the new MINI Cooper) and I made our way home safely, calmly (if a little heartbroken) and somewhat appreciative that I got to see him and thankful that he seems happy.

Even though there are many things in my life I would love to change -- the love and relationship I've always wanted, the kind of work I've been seeking, the rebirth of my DJing career -- this night has really highlighted just how far I've come. Perhaps its cliché and I get tired of hearing it let alone telling myself, but I know that this whole process has been an exercise in coming to find myself and that deep self-appreciation I had lacked. While I've wished that it would show up in my external world, perhaps I'm finally to know instead of just trying to believe that in the face of everything I've lost, I've really come to find more than I ever have before.

WoW Meets Politics

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned seeing this Toyota commercial to Adam:

While I've never actually played WoW, instead playing DDO and then moving on to Vanguard, I thought it was rather interesting because its an acknowledgment of just how extensive the reach of gaming has been. Overall, I gave the commercial a thumbs up and the big honking truck a thumbs down because I'm a MINI kind of guy, ya know?

Yesterday I encountered Mike Huckabee's new video:

On one hand, its somewhat refreshing to see a little humor in this incredibly overgrown political season. On the other hand, this is just very, very sad... its not as if Huckabee has any chance to secure the nomination but when lame Chuck Norris jokes start forming the basis of your appeal, you know you're scraping the bottom of the barrel. I know politics has increasingly turned toward the sound bite and bumper sticker slogans but this has to be the low point in the history of the Republic.

That said, if you're going to go for a WoW themed commercial, leave it to Coke and the Chinese to do it right:

Its Chinese Girl Power, baby!

Nigel Gets His Stripes

NigelI wanted to thank everybody who voted for the stripes for the new car. As you can see, I trusted your good judgment and went with the offset stripes. And, as you can see from the title of this entry, I decided to name the car "Nigel." Seemed appropriate to me.

Stripes

Now that the new Mini is finally home, my most recent issue is that the hood is bare. The stripes are mine for the choosing. I've got several options, so I figured I'd let you guys weigh in. Here are the options:

Option 1: The standard white stripes. I think black would be a little too dark on a dark blue car.

Option 2: The triple checkerboard. A nice variation on the checkerboard theme you usually see on the top of the Cooper.

Option 3: The offset stripes. On the driver's side. Again, white.

Option 4: Lightning. White, with black accent.

There are other options - you can check them out over at MightyStripes, but those are the ones that I really like. There's also the question of whether to just stick to the hood (bonnet) or add them to the boot and top. You can take a look at how that looks at MightyStripes, but the Offset is the only one I think looks good over the length of the car. I'm going to leave that question for the time being. Anyway, feel free to vote and/or comment. I'm looking forward to what people think.

Cooper, pt. 2

Please say hello to the new Cooper, as of yet unnamed. A 2005, no less. If you have to get into an accident, its nice to wind up with a replacement car that's 3 years younger than the car you lost. Hopefully I won't have to go through that process again anytime soon!

So, what's the difference between the old one and the new one? Well, Anderson was a 2002, had manual transmission. This one is a 2005, automatic transition and a sunroof, which is quite nice. The only thing missing is the seat warmers, which are nice for a few weeks, but not a big deal. The color has a bit of a purple hue to it, though I'd still call it blue, rather than full on purple. Feel free to leave suggestions for the name.

MINI - The Next Generation

MINI unveiled the next generation Cooper at the 2007 International Auto Show in Detroit, along with a special edition of convertible - the Mini Cooper Sidewalk. The new Coopers will go on sale on February 17. There's no chance that I'll be moving up to the new model for my next car, but its great to see what's to come. It just makes me want the insurance company to call me even sooner so I can get my new car already!

Gripe

Ok, being in a car accident generally sucks all around. That said, if you have to be in one and you manage to walk away uninjured, I'm of the opinion that you take that, even if it costs you your car. That's why they have insurance. Anyway, the accident was over a month ago (no, I decided not to blog about it until now) and they've just decided that they're going to total out the car as opposed to repair it. All of this was going on during the holidays, so I understand why its taken some extra time, but I'm bordering on frustration. Doing my best to just let things happen in their own time, but dammit, I want my car back. Anyway, I called the insurance company to follow up and get a sense of what needs to happen to get a check so I can finally get a new car. My gripe is this: After entering the agent's extension (that's why they give it to you), I had to wait 8 minutes and go through two operators only to make it to voicemail. I don't mind leaving a voicemail but having to listen to a recording of a woman who sounds like Patty and Selma from the Simpsons talking about how important my call was just adding insult to injury. I want this to be over already.
