I Survived Light Rail

12272008476Yesterday was the grand opening for Valley Metro's new light rail service here in the Valley. It's a project that's been years in the making. My dad and I decided to head to downtown Phoenix to catch an exhibit at the Arizona Science Center and we figured that it would be a great opportunity to check out the new light rail system. We headed down to the Apache & Dorsey station because it was designated as a "Park & Ride" stop. We were greeted with a carnival-like atmosphere as there were a number of celebrations going on at several stations.

12272008478While I anticipated that people would come out on the first day, I hadn't realized that turnout would be as heavy as it was. While I heard reports of 2.5 hour waits, we managed to get the first train that stopped. That said, we were greeted with a train that was absolutely packed. It was a very un-Phoenix-like experience. Still, the riders seemed to be in good spirits -- the conductor would announce that he was closing the doors and would count down from 5 to 1 and the riders began counting down with him. The high point was crossing Tempe Town Lake and hearing the oohs and ahs as we glided over the water. Once we crossed into Phoenix, it became an actual clown car experience, as a clown made her way onto our already overcrowded car. I overheard a few passengers around me wishing physical violence on the wayward clown.

12272008480The trip back was a little more trying. I had hoped that perhaps things would settle down later in the day. I miscalculated. We headed for the 1st Avenue and Washington station after lunch. There were many more people than at the Apache & Dorsey station. The first train came and was full, I overheard some riders saying that they had seen several trains come and go and hadn't been able to get on. Officials at the station said that there was another train following in 5 or 10 minutes, but it ended up being around 20 minutes to the next train. Valley Metro was also running special buses along the light rail route for those who didn't want to wait, but as we saw those buses pass us by, they seemed as crowded as the light rail cars.

12272008481Fortunately, we were able to get on the second train, as I was determined to push my way on and make the trip back home. The trip back was less comfortable than the first -- the cars were more crowded on the way back, it seemed like everyone was tired and ready to get back home. I remember someone remarking that we were being herded like cattle, but I reminded him that because of a recent initiative passed, farm animals are required to have much more space for them to move.

HandsOverall, I was very pleased with the experience. I'm glad they had so many people come out in support and I hope that people use it. I'm interested in seeing what the ridership is like once regular service starts. I'm also hoping they come to their senses and extend service on Friday and Saturday nights for people who want to hit the bars. I'm also interested in seeing how the areas around the line develop -- I'd have to believe that the land use around it is going to change quite a bit. It was a great start and I'm looking forward to seeing how things come together.

Happy Halloween?

I hope everybody had a good Halloween. Mine was uneventful, for the most part. The highlight of the evening was finding out some kids decided that tearing up our Obama sign would be a good Halloween trick. Fear not, I managed to tape the sign up and put it back out later that night.

That said, it sounds like the grumpy McCain supports are taking this election to the extreme... via Halloween tactics. Maybe this was the "October Surprise" they were talking about: According to an AP Press report, a woman in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan decided that she was only giving out candy to kids whose parents supported John McCain. I shit you not.

According to TV station WJPK, Shirley Nagel posted a sign outside her house that read: "No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters." Apparently, it wasn't just an empty threat. Asked about turning away two kids, driven to tears, she explained, "Oh well. Everybody has a choice."

Wow. Sometimes the stereotypes prove themselves.

Happy New Year!

Hope you guys had a happy and safe New Years Eve. I know New Years brings a lot of talk about possibilities and resolutions and the like. Here we are again talking about hopes and dreams for things to come. Honestly, I feel like 2008 has so much potential, but I've said that the past couple of years. So what makes this year any different?

The past few years have been a challenge for me -- I've seen things seem to come together so many times only to fall apart over and over again. I've come to fell like a lot of that came down to a lack of clarity... for the most part, I had really wanted things to be settled, to have what other people have -- a stable job, a relationship, a place to DJ, stuff like that. While this doesn't seem out of line, at the core of me, I can't help but realize now that I want so much more than that. But what? Where exactly do I want to go? That's the question I've struggled with for the past few years.

While the past few years have been frustrating, I'm coming to understand that they've help me come to understand just what it is I want. For the first time, I can honestly tell myself exactly what I'd like to do with the next several years of my life and it has nothing to do with a guy or a place or trying to shoehorn myself into a particular job or role. Instead, I've had the chance to stop and say, "This is the direction I want to go, this is what I want to create." I don't know how I'm gonna get there or what the next step is, but at the moment, I feel like this is the most important thing I could have done.

Decemberween Dinner

Last night I attended our annual Decemberween dinner with Adam, Dyanna, Kacy and the Greg, Miguel & Renee, Renee's rack, and Michael Bojangles. This year featured something new -- very spicy food at Thai Hut. Unfortunately, we didn't offend anyone at the restaurant, although there was a guy who looked like Santa who asked if Adam's brownies were hash brownies. Sadly, the answer was no.

Among the general festiveness of the occasion and the remarks that we really should get together more often, we also had a White Elephant gift exchange. While a pure White Elephant exchange, in my opinion, should consists of gifts that nobody wants -- after all, that's what the term White Elephant means -- our group of gifts was truly pitiful. It included the ugliest slippers known to mankind, a star-shaped cookie cutter filled with nasty dried gunk, a game involving shocking people with electric current ("Don't taze me, bro!") as well as candles that smelled like urinal cakes.

Apparently I was the only one who thought that the gifts should have SOME sort of appealing features. Kacy was the lucky recipient of my gift - a Christmas edition of the legendary Pop Art toaster. Yes, nothing says fun like toast with stuff written on it. Just because I know you were wondering, yes they do have plates that will make your toast say "Bite Me" as well as "boys r smelly." You think I'm kidding, but I'm not. Really, the Pop Art toaster is the perfect gift for all occasions... ok, for maybe the one event where its not appropriate you can go with its sister product -- the 5 in 1 Tasty Baker.

How do I know that the Pop Art toaster is the perfect gift? Two words for you -- celebrity endorsements. Charlie Sheen loves his Pop Art toaster. Kevin Sorbo does too. I know what you're thinking, though -- both Charlie Sheen and Kevin Sorbo have kids. What about for us gays? Don't worry, Pop Art has you covered. Neil Patrick Harris loves his Pop Art toaster. If its good enough for Doogie Howser, M.D., you know its appropriate for any of your A-List gay functions. I'm telling you, 2008 is the year that the Pop Art toaster hits the White Party and becomes THE sought after item on the Circuit.

Dia del Pavo

While I jokingly refer to today as Dia del Pavo, or Turkey Day, even though its been a challenging I really do have a lot to be thankful for. A few special mentions from the Blogging world:

Adam: the one who nudged me into starting this whole blogging thing and who has managed to become one of my closest friends. Thanks for sharing sumptuous Indian food with me as well as engaging in interesting existential discussions.

Alex: another blogger turned good friend. Aside from always being interested in my life and wellbeing, as well as always finding interesting beeves that are worthy of my attention, I never have to get worked up about the state of the world or politics because he's there to do it for me.

The Daily Slab: for providing prime beef for my viewing pleasure.

Donnie: for his always entertaining Mug Shot Mondays.

And to all my readers, especially those of you who take the time to comment: you make this whole exercise much more interesting.

My Little Pony

Michael Bojangles 007So yesterday was my birthday... thanks everyone for the comments! The highlight of my day was having dinner with Adam, Dyanna, Kacy & the Greg at Flavors of India in Phoenix. We hadn't gotten together since July, so it was a happy reunion. We tend to be a bit of a rowdy bunch when we get together -- at Dyanna's last birthday we had an older couple ask to be moved away from our table when we started talking about sex toys and a similar experience with Kacy's birthday. This evening was no different.

To make this day just a little more special, Adam & Dyanna gave me a purple unicorn we dubbed "Michael Bojangles," after Michael from Texas, who was not physically present, but with us in spirit. This sassy unicorn got his own place at the table, which did seem to puzzle our waitress, but no more so than Dyanna trying to explain that she was trying to order food without any onions... that said, our waitress seemed to be puzzled easily, as the Greg tried to order a 7 & 7, to no avail.

Michael Bojangles 006After dinner I headed over to Burn for their 1st year anniversary party that my friend Noah had put together. It had a superhero theme (hence the X-Men T-Shirt I was wearing) and brought in DJ Alexander from LA. I usually enjoy guest DJs and I hadn't heard Alexander before, so it was great to hear someone new. Turnout was great and a couple friends of mine had just moved back to town from San Diego and I was glad to be able to spend the evening with them.

Anyway, in the past I'd not really looked forward to my birthday and this went a long way to help me change my attitude on birthdays. Here's hoping that I have even more to celebrate next year.

Year In Review - Part 1

I know the year isn't over quite yet, but given that its a slow week at work, its a great time to look back at the year that was here on echeblog. What was really important? Well, the easiest way to find out is to look at the top 10 searches that brought people here:

1. Brady Quinn - He may have finished 3rd in the Heisman voting but it was no contest here. Actually, there were a few variations of searches for Brady in the top 20 (or more), but I decided to combine them. I can't really blame you all - I could really spend all day looking at shirtless pics of Brady.

2. Chris Wide - Ah porn star beef. I'd put up a pic of him too but I think looking for it at work is probably a BAD idea.

3. Gay Beef - If this isn't the essense of this blog, I don't know what is.

4. Scorpians - Not really sure what to say about that one.

5. Mark Dalton Gay - He's pretty, but he's strictly gay for pay. Just so you know.

6. Lea Coco - If you're scratching your head wondering who the hell I'm talking about, go rent Dorian Blues - a recent gay coming out flick. Overall the movie is ok, but Lea Coco plays Dorian's hunky straight brother. I chalk this up to the fact that he's a relatively unknown actor who hasn't got much press, so there isn't much competition for those hits.

7. Gerard Butler Shirtless - He was hot enough in the Tomb Raider movie he was in, but if you've seen some of the shots of him shirtless in "300," the sexy Scott has raised his beef rating to a new level. Of course, he inspired his own haiku!

8. Scott Wolf - Ah Bailey from Party of Five. So cute.

9. Zubbles. Colored bubbles! Fun for the whole family! Who says this isn't a family friendly blog?

10. Lockerroom - Is an explanation really necessary?
